The name arthropod actually comes from the Greek “arthro,” meaning joint, and “pod,” meaning foot.

  • Live anywhere
  • Their bodies do not have internal bones
  • Bilateral Symmetry

Subphylum Crustacea


    • Class Cephalocarida (Small primitive shrimps only discovered in 1955)
    • Class Branchiopoda (Small primitive animals with gills on their feet i.e. Daphnia)
    • Class Ostracoda (small animals which look like miniature bivalves)
    • Class Mystacocarida (Minute thin shrimp like creatures)
    • Class Copepeda (Important small crustaceans such as Cyclops)
    • Class Branchiura (Small blood sucking ectoparasites)
    • Class Cirripeda (Barnacles)
    • Class Malacostraca (75% of all Crustaceans, Crabs, Lobsters, Shrimps and Prawns as well as Woodlice)

  • Cla Insecta (Insects)
  • C Diplopoda (Millipedes)
  • Cl Symphyla (Small centipede like creatures which live in leaf litter)
  • Cl Pauropoda (Small soft bodied animals of the forest floor)

Benefit
Multicellular life on this planet would simply collapse and probably disappear altogether without arthropoda. They are important in nutrient recycling in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. They supply food directly for huge numbers of Amphibians, Fish, Birds and Mammals and Reptiles and indirectly for other animals.
